Adding High-End Touches to Your Kitchen On a Budget

31st May 2018

The kitchen is the hub of the home

Whether you're a talented cook or just like to rustle up a ready meal, you can't deny that the kitchen is the hub of the home. It's where we all gather together to catch up on the day's events. We enjoy our morning coffee here and read the paper. Or simply, we make multiple trips here throughout the day to replenish ourselves with food and drink. A kitchen that feels and looks nice can make a real difference to your home. After all, it's where you spend a lot of time. This can be especially true if you have an open-plan kitchen or kitchen/diner crossover.

So, we think it's very important that we take a little extra time to spruce up this well-loved room of the house and keep it up to speed with the rest of our interior design. If you're a fan of the high-end look but don't want to break the bank, we've got just the tips and tricks for you.

Adding those high-end touches on a budget

From our many years of experience in furniture and homeware, we've got plenty of recommendations. It's a tricky business and you can tend to feel overwhelmed by choice. However, we've picked out just a few of our favourite tips and condensed them down into this easy-to-read list. Want to create a designer look in your home hub? Look no further:

Dig out the paintbrush

Over time, we can end up with dishevelled looking cabinets and mismatching colours. In our opinion, nothing looks more luxury than clean, sleek cabinets with matching panels. Get yourself a cheap paintbrush, you can pick these up for a couple of pounds in B&M or on Amazon. Or use one from the cupboard! Then, purchase a pot of paint in your desired colour; you could either freshen up the original shade or go for something totally different. Currently, dark colours are massively on-trend. Re-painting your cabinets is a great way to completely change the look of your kitchen.

Get clever with storage

There's nothing worse than an overly cluttered kitchen. This is one of the first things we'd recommend when trying to create a more welcoming, luxurious room to cook and eat in: tidy. Have a real decluttering session and then decide if you need to add any extra storage. Chances are, you will. Utilise your cupboard space by adding extra shelves or hooks on the doors. This is a great method for storing away things that really don't need to be in plain view. In terms of your mug cupboard, we recommend hiding away any mismatched or novelty mugs. You can then save your best matching set for a display on the sideboard if that's your thing. Remember, when it comes to a high-end look, minimal is best.

Change up your accessories

Can't afford to have a whole new kitchen fitted? Why don't you consider just changing up the cabinet doors or even just the door handles? If you want to go for a real designer look, we recommend glossy black doors or open glass panels. For the handles, try straight nickel handles or stainless steel for that modern, industrial look. You could even go simple and just invest in a new kettle, toaster and microwave. If you're pretty happy with the look of your kitchen already, changing up your small appliances can make the world of difference. This Breville 4-slice toaster is only £28.99 whilst the matching kettle is just £28.0 - both boast that high-gloss, contemporary finish.

Go sleek with your seating

Once you've dealt with the bulk of the kitchen, take a look at your seating arrangements. If you're lucky enough to have a breakfast bar, it might be time to update your bar stools. Have you got an open-plan room that merges into a dining area? If so, you may want to change up your dining chairs to match with the new kitchen aesthetic. As you use the seating in your kitchen a lot, you'll notice a real difference if they have been modernised and adapted for a higher-end look. Try slick, faux leather bar stools with a chrome frame or modern Scandinavian-inspired dining chairs for the ultimate style overhaul.

Create an illusion with scents

If you're really struggling to decorate your kitchen to a high-end standard, or you've already done everything above and there's something missing, look no further. All that you need to do is introduce a beautiful scent into the room to really give it that luxurious, homely feel. We recommend citrus scents combined with tangerine and mandarin for a fresh, calm environment. Opt for candles in the winter and room sprays in the summer. And most importantly? Try to open your windows or use ventilation fans whenever you can while cooking. Nothing spoils a high-end kitchen more than the lingering stench of food!
