How to restore Rattan Furniture

3rd June 2017

Top grade synthetic rattan garden furniture should not need any restoration work. This is due to the material being resistant to moulds, scratches, and fading. The dye runs all through the material so scratches will not show. Also the weave is durable enough to avoid any snaps or breaks. The only thing you need to do is give your furniture a general clean before storing for winter.

How to restore against Fading

Lower grade materials however can be more susceptible to colour fading. Lower grade materials can also be prone to snapping if left out in harsh weather conditions such as winter. If your furniture does fade, there is not much that can be done to restore the colour. The only thing you are able to do is protect it from any strong UV rays again.

How to restore against scratches

If it scratches the best way to disguise the scratch is to colour with a felt tip pen. Other than this you can rub the affected area with a walnut as shown below. Another method is to heat the weave with a hair dryer and rub the area with a soft cloth. This will gently buff out any scratches. With this method however, you may be left with a lighter patch.
