How to Clean the Plastic, Wood & Metal on Your Eames Chair

As the proud owner of an Eames chair, you're probably bursting with reasons as to why this iconic piece of furniture is the best thing in your home. They truly make a stunning addition to any room, combining Scandinavian style with mid-century tradition. But when it comes to cleaning day, you may have a few questions. How do I clean the different materials that make up my Eames chair? Generally, especially if bought from Lakeland Furniture, you'll find that the seat is made from ABS plastic whilst the legs are made from a combination of metal and wood. Sometimes, the legs will be either solid wood or simply metal rod but it's almost always one or the other. So, it's worth knowing how to clean and maintain each of these individual materials efficiently.

what you'll need:

  • Baby wipes
  • Warm, soapy water
  • Sponge
  • Clean, absorbent cloth
  • Used dryer sheets
  • Cotton wall balls
  • Furniture polish

The method:

  1. Begin by tackling the upper plastic seat as this is the easiest part to clean. Use a baby wipe to scrub away any food marks or spillages that stand out. For overall cleaning, you should use a bucket of warm, soapy water. Take a sponge, soak it in the soapy water and wipe all over the plastic part of the chair. Use a clean cloth to rinse away any suds or water and allow to dry.
  2. Next, you can clean the metal rods or legs (depending on the style of your chair). Use the same warm, soapy water for the metal but much more sparingly. Pat dry with a clean cloth and buff up with used dryer sheets. Leaving metal wet for too long will ultimately cause rust so this should be a quick and efficient process.
  3. Finally, you can start to clean the wooden legs (again, if your chair has these). Use that same soapy solution for the wood but even more sparingly. The key is to not let any water soak into the wood but to lightly wipe over the legs so the soap can do its job. For the best outcome, use cotton wall balls lightly dipped into the soapy water to wash the wood. Use a clean cloth and some furniture polish to buff up the legs.

That's all there is to it. Now you know how to clean your beloved Eames chair and there's no excuse! Just because something is made up of multiple materials does not mean that maintaining it should be difficult.
