Creating an Amazing Patio Area

17th June 2019

As we all look forward to the summer months and hopefully long summer days and nights, what better way to spend our time than by creating an amazing patio area to be able to relax on, and enjoy some al fresco eating, and entertaining. Whether you have a large garden or a small outdoor area there is lots of fun to be had to create your own special space.

Choosing Your Patio Flags

One of the first decisions to be made is what sort of base to have for your patio and there are a wide variety of flagstones, paving slabs and patio stones to choose from.

These beautiful Old Lancashire Mill Garden Paving Slabs are grey buff and khaki hues and retain the colour and texture of centuries past and will add instant maturity and style to any design. They are extremely versatile and a fraction of the cost of real York stone. Made from high specification fibre reinforced reconstituted stone.

Created directly from hand selected original reclaimed York stone masters, Lancashire Mill Paving Flags are often chosen to accurately illustrate the patina, markings and character prevalent in the streets and former mills from where they were reclaimed.

The accuracy and authenticity of reproduction and the dozens of unique and varied pattern make it difficult to spot that these flags are in fact replicas. At a fraction of the cost of real reclaimed York stone they are more consistent in thickness making them much easier and therefore less expensive, to lay.

You could also decide to perhaps co-ordinate your outdoor area with your indoor living space and create a contemporary landscape with Amazon Black Slate Paving Slabs. These flagstones are suitable for both a contemporary patio or where a cool but more traditional effect is desired.

Dark charcoal grey in colour, visually stunning, they can be used as a whole patio area or as part of a design to create impact. Slate is very durable and easy to maintain, naturally non slip it is also ideal for paths and steps. Or maybe choose a flagstone inspired by the stone floors, courtyard paving and garden pathways of great British palaces.

Richmond York porcelain offers a traditional flagstone colouring and will bridge the gap between traditional style and contemporary design. The Palace Porcelain collection is a fusion of stone and tile and offers the best properties of each.

Having created the base for your patio, next to choose is your garden furniture.

Garden Furniture

Consider the size of your outdoor space and how you wish to use it, be it for entertaining family and friends for some al fresco dining, or a small intimate dining area for your immediate family. Or perhaps you just want to create a patio as an area to sit and read and relax and watch the world go by.

Outdoor garden furniture can be adapted to suit many occasions, and rattan furniture, particularly artificial rattan, is a very popular choice. It is very easy to maintain and can be left outside even in our rainy climate. Rattan furniture comes in a variety of styles and can be adapted for different uses. Choices vary from rattan dining sets to sofa sets.

For a small patio space a compact table and 4 chairs would create an appealing dining area, or if you have a larger area choose from one of the large sets which can seat up to 10 people and come in a modular layout. The addition of deep sumptuous cushions add a feeling of luxury.

If you wish to use your patio for relaxing why not choose a garden rattan sofa set which can be adapted for different spaces and different occasions, and comes with a coffee table for those all important drinks.

To complete your furniture choices choose a garden parasol/umbrella, to protect you from the direct sunlight. These are available in a wide variety of colours, ranging from bright red and green, to blend in with a colourful garden, or a neutral cream which will suit any garden furniture and compliment any cushions on your furniture.

The parasols / umbrellas are available in 3 meter or 2 meter diameter, some are wind up and some are wind up and tilt, giving you all day coverage from the sun without having to move the parasol, they are easy to use - just press the button.

A parasol cover is often forgotten but is important if you wish to protect your parasol and keep it in full working order for years to come. Parasols are often prone to rust and discolouration due to rain and dirt so to keep yours looking good all year round maybe invest in a parasol cover.

Whilst it feels wonderful to have your very own patio area to enjoy it is also good to create a feeling of privacy to enable you to enjoy quality time with family and friends. There are numerous ways of doing this from the more structured wall to the natural privacy screen created with hedges or plants.

A high fence decorated with LED lights can create a simple but contemporary private area. Another idea is to use lattice panels to form a screen, either paint or stain them and perhaps add some hanging plants to accessorize the area. One advantage of lattice fencing is that whilst creating privacy it still lets the sunlight in, and also protects from the wind, especially useful if you have a fire pit!

A natural privacy screen can be created by training vines to cover a fence, this might be a slower procedure, but well worth the time when the vines grow to completely cover the fencing. A further natural appearing privacy screen can be created by utilizing shrubs and trees together with beautiful plants and flowers, which then become a part of your landscape.

If you have limited time or don’t particularly enjoy the upkeep of a garden why not use artificial hedging to create a privacy screen or maybe a garden screen made from a wood-plastic composite which is resistant to weather and easy to maintain- these have been likened to wall art - all of the privacy none of the maintenance - leaving you more time to enjoy your amazing patio area.

Garden Accessories

Now to accessorize your patio and garden for complete enjoyment and relaxation, make it your own special area with the addition of lots of lovely shrubs to add structure and interest, with a large variety of sizes and colours from flowering shrubs which provide a seasonal show, evergreen shrubs for all year round interest, and deciduous shrubs with berries and foliage.

Shrubs are a welcome and interesting addition to your garden creating something different to gaze at whilst perhaps having breakfast on your new patio.

Metal garden ornaments have become a very popular feature in gardens, often cast from iron and aluminium or crafted in polyresin which has an authentic bronze or copper finish. The subject matter ranges from stags, majestic storks to farmyard chickens and cute hedgehogs. Fairies and pixies placed in flower beds are sure to surprise youngsters and grown-ups alike.

An area with a bird table and bird bath create a special area, choose from a traditional wooden bird table to blend in with the surrounding garden or perhaps a bird feeding station to make a striking feature. Hanging bird tables and bird baths are available and can be camouflaged within the garden.

Use different types of seeds on the bird table to attract different birds, and enjoy a quiet moment spotting the different species which will visit your garden.

Enjoy creating your own individual amazing patio area.
