Creating a Christmas Floral Arrangement for Your Home

8th December 2017

It's all well and good having a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the middle of your living room. It's even better to have plenty of lights draped around the house and the smell of cookies wafting through the kitchen. But what is a traditional festive home without a Christmas floral arrangement? It may seem a little old fashioned but the right combination of flowers can really make your home feel special. Alongside this, creating a floral arrangement can be a really fun activity with a few friends joining in. It'd also make a really nice homemade gift! So, without further ado, here's how to create a DIY flower arrangement.

How to create a Christmas floral arrangement

What you'll need

  • Flowers of your choice (poinsettia, white chrysanthemums and red amaryllis are great choices for Christmas)
  • Additional foliage like mini fir trees, pine cones twigs and holly
  • A vase, glass bottle or pot to place the flowers in (metallic gold or silver is recommended!)
  • Scissors
  • Gloves to handle if you have sensitive skin
  • Tape
  • Decorations like ribbons or bells

1. Trimming the flowers

Being by laying out all your chosen flowers. Cut, diagonally, the end of each stem off above where a set of leaves lies.

2. Setting up the vase

Fill the vase or chosen container up 2/3 with water at room temperature. Then, take strips of tape and stick it across the top of the vase in a grid pattern. This will give you a system to keep your stems in place!

3. arranging your flowers

Begin by placing the largest flowers in the vase, one at a time. Use the tape grid to help you arrange them in an attractive formation.

4. decorating!

Now is the fun part! Use your additional foliage and place it around the flowers to create a beautiful piece of artwork. If you've got pinecones, you can place these on top of the foliage so they are on visible. Then, tie your ribbon and bells around the vase or around the flowers - you can get really creative with this part.

Top tip: Sprinkle glitter over the top of your arrangement to add a really fabulous festive touch!

5. fill in any gaps

Shuffle your flowers around to fill in any gaps, or add in extra foliage to make your vase look full and blooming. Now, you can place the arrangement anywhere in the home that you see fit - or give it to a friend as a lovely gift!
