How to get mould off your outdoor cushions this summer

No-one likes mould but it seems to crop up everywhere doesn't it? And unfortunately, it can sometimes ruin our favourite things. When you're relaxing against your outdoor cushions this summer, the last thing you want to see is mould. We've put together our best top tips to help you get mould off outdoor cushions in no time. Say goodbye to that pesky green-black stuff.

Important: Bear in mind that bleach might not the best material to use on your cushions. Understandably, it might be the first thing you think of. But it can be too harsh to treat some fabrics. It's important to do a spot test before using any bleach or bleach-related products on your cushions. We've included two 'what you'll need' lists and two methods - whichever one you use will depend on how your cushion fabric reacts to a bleach spot test.

What you'll need:

  • Bleach
  • Water
  • Spray bottle
  • Scrub brush

Or alternatively...

  • Dettol
  • Hot water
  • Scrub brush
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt

The Method

Firstly, let's try the bleach method. Take a small amount of bleach mixed with some water and apply to an inconspicuous spot on your outdoor cushion. Then, leave it to soak for a few hours. If there are no adverse effects, such as colour damage, you're good to go. Next, dilute 1/2 cup of bleach into 1 gallon of water (about 120ml to 4 litres). Then, fill the spray bottle up with the mixture and apply liberally to the affected area. Use the scrub brush to really make the mould or mildew disappear. Afterwards, rinse the cushion with some water.

Now, if the bleach spot test failed, you'll need to follow this method. Mix 1/2 cup of Dettol with a gallon of hot water (again, 120ml to 4 litres). Then, use the mixture to work into your cushion with the scrub brush. Once you've finished, you need to create a second mixture. Take 1 cup of lemon juice and dissolve 1 cup of salt into it, then add to a gallon of hot water. Use this solution to rinse off the original mixture.
