Cleaning your upholstered bed's headboard

Yep, we know. We're a little helping hand here at Lakeland Furniture and we love to produce these how-to guides for you. Today, we're tackling how to clean an upholstered bed frame. If you're the owner of a bed upholstered in a fabric, you'll know that it can look amazing and feel really cosy. However, people often get put off by the cleaning regime. It really doesn't have to be difficult! Let us talk you through some simple steps to ensure your upholstered bed stays looking fresh and new.

As long as you're willing to keep up a regular routine, your fabric headboard should never be too much of an issue. You spend a lot of time in bed and oils from your hair or body lotions and potions can quite easily ruin your upholstery. Not only that but everyday dust will always find its way onto the headboard. You can't prevent these things from happening, of course. However, you can maintain the fabric so it doesn't get ruined over time.

What you'll need:

  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Fabric cleaner spray (like Vanish)
  • Scented linen spray (like Febreze)
  • Baking soda
  • Dry cloth

The method

Okay, so let's get started. First things first, you'll need to make vacuuming the bed a weekly habit. Regularly using a vacuum on the upholstery can prevent dust from becoming ingrained. Next, you'll want to use a fabric cleaner spray to get rid of any marks or stains you notice. Be sure to do a spot test before you spray the whole headboard! Choose a hidden, easily-concealed area of your upholstered bed frame and test the fabric cleaner. Check back in a few hours to see if it has discoloured or ruined the fabric. If not, you're good to go! This is a routine that you'll want to make regular, try every week or so.

Next, these steps may be less frequent but can make a big difference. Use a scented linen spray to spritz the headboard, you'll be surprised how much more fresh your room will feel! When you think the headboard needs freshening up, perhaps every month or so, you can use the baking soda trick. Pour a generous amount of baking soda onto a dry cloth and pat into the upholstery. Let it sit for a few hours then remove any residue with the vacuum cleaner. It's probably best to do this when you're changing the bed sheets as baking soda can get everywhere!

Keep it fresh

If you keep on top of these simple tricks and incorporate them into your routine, you'll notice how easy it is to keep your upholstered bed as good as new.
