How to Prevent Mould and Mildew Growing On Rattan Furniture

Preventing mould and mildew

Rattan furniture can be the perfect addition to any garden, patio or conservatory. In fact, we'd go as far as saying that it truly makes an outdoor space feel like home. It's comfortable, durable and practical. However, it's not entirely invincible! All too often, we see unsightly mould and mildew grow on our favourite garden furniture. Today, we're going to explain the reasons why this happens and how you can prevent it.

Why do mould and mildew grow in the first place?

Well, it's quite simple. These unsavoury fungi can easily bloom wherever there is moisture. You may even spot mould in your home - in corners of your bathroom or behind sofas. But today we're focusing on rattan furniture. When humidity is high and if there is potential for water damage, there is a good chance you'll find mould and mildew. These fungi also love cold temperatures. This is somewhat seemingly difficult to tackle in the UK climate as we often get cold weather and high humidity. However, there are things you can do!

How to prevent mould and mildew growing on rattan furniture

Firstly, you should ensure that any area where you have placed your rattan furniture is well-ventilated. If your furniture is outside then, of course, this won't be a problem. However, if you have a conservatory you should ensure windows are open whenever they can be to keep the air flowing through. Use a fan if you don't wish to open your windows or keep the doors propped open when possible. Keep your rattan furniture away from too many plants as they contribute to a humid atmosphere. This is why it is best to keep your furniture on patio or decking - grass can be terrible for the build-up of mould. Make sure your conservatory is kept heated throughout colder months to prevent any potential mould. For outdoor rattan furniture, make sure to store correctly in winter by reading our guide here.

How to prevent mould and mildew growing on your outdoor cushions

Of course, mould and mildew attack more than just your furniture. Your outdoor cushions may also be susceptible to the fungi. Make sure you dry them thoroughly when you have cleaned them - make use of your airing cupboard and tumble dry if possible. Also, never let them sit outside in bad weather!
