How to Achieve a Scandinavian Home Office Look

7th November 2018

Why we're still in love with Scandinavian design

This time last year, we wrote a blog post all about 'Hygge' - what it was, how it had become a UK obsession and how we could achieve it. The Scandinavian concept, born in Denmark, has since taken over the world. Not only are we still loving Hygge here in the UK, especially now we're going into winter, but we still totally adore all things Scandi. We're talking Lykke, Lagom, minimal colours and clean lines. There's just something so satisfying about it and the Scandinavian style is truly easy to achieve for anyone. All you need, to start with, is a blank canvas or a neutral base. Scandi cool is all about minimal shades, simple shapes and comfort. Keep reading to find out how you can achieve this look in your home office.

Achieving a Scandinavian home office in a few simple steps

Keep 'things' to a minimum

First things first, you should know that minimalism is key to most Scandinavian trends. Yes, Hygge is all about cosiness and comfort but that doesn't mean clutter. It simply means carefully-selected pieces that are going to add to your life at home in a positive way. And that's the same for any concept in Scandi interior design. Apply this logic to your home office: only have what you really need and what truly makes you happy. So, if your current office is full of junk... now's the time to declutter. Make four piles: keep, move elsewhere, recycle/charity and bin. Often, stuff piles up in rooms where it doesn't belong as well as stuff that we simply don't need. Keeping on top of a minimal environment is very Scandinavian and it'll also boost your productivity in the office! Tidy house, tidy mind, after all.

Use a white and neutral colour scheme

Many houses these days are painted in white and cream as standard and that works perfectly for the Scandi theme. If you really want to achieve this style in your home office, we recommend giving the room a lick of paint. Use white, cream or natural shades like pale green and pink. As for the rest of the room? Think beige, white, cream, wood - all tones that we'd expect to see within a Scandinavian home office's furniture and accessories. If in doubt, go with white as it matches pretty much everything. That, and it looks clean and smart, too.

Ensure that accessories have a purpose

This kind of ties into the whole 'minimal' thing from earlier. In any office, you're bound to have accessories. Speakers, laptop stands, pen pots, houseplants... the list goes on. Just make sure that these accessories have a purpose and a function - just as much as your furniture does. Even if that function is to fill an empty space, like with a plant, at least it has a purpose to be there! Overcrowding walls with artwork and cluttering your desk with bits and bobs you don't need is going to take away from the overall look of your Scandinavian home office. Working with symmetry and geometrical shapes helps if you've got a few accessories and don't know how to place them.

Choose furniture that complements the theme

There's no point painting your walls and shopping for Scandi-like accessories if your furniture is all wrong. After all, your furniture is going to be a main focal point, especially in an office. And don't worry - it's not hard to come by chairs and desks that will look good in a Scandinavian home office. Magazines, blogs and furniture stores alike are jam-packed with ideas and inspiration! Here at Lakeland Furniture, we have a particularly impressive collection of Scandinavian products for you to browse. From the beautiful Bergen dining chair to the sturdy Wilmslow desk, you'll be able to kit out your office in no time. And if you're wondering how to search for Scandi-inspired furniture, there are a few things you should be looking out for:

  • Natural wood
  • Light, airy colours
  • Clean lines
  • Minimal detail
  • Nature meets modernism
  • Some metal features

Most importantly, allow yourself a break!

In Scandinavian culture, people generally have good work/life balance and fully appreciate the benefits of a rest. This is all the more important when working from home, as it can be hard to draw a line and switch off. Enjoying a cup of coffee away from your desk or setting a clear 'end' time to your working day is hugely beneficial and will make your home office feel like a much nicer place to work. You can have the most 'perfect' Scandinavian home office in the world but if you don't make like the Scandi people and enjoy some 'me' time, you'll never get it right.
