Transform your kitchen into an entertaining space...

...ready for the holiday season! Halloween, Bonfire Night, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years - the list goes on. The upcoming months really are for celebrating with family and friends, so there's no better time to get your home ready. Whether you like to entertain everyone you know or simply have a few friends round, it's important to feel confident about your home. Each room has its own function and purpose so why not use them to their full potential? In today's blog post, we're going to explore how to turn your kitchen into the perfect entertaining space. You might remember our post back in July about creating a party room from your kitchen. Well, think of this as the updated, winter season version! We'll run you through the best furniture for your kitchen as well as easy ways to throw a great gathering, whatever the occasion.

Line up the musical chairs

First things first, we all know that seating is crucial when having people round to your place. No one wants to stand up all night! Whether you opt for bar stools or dining chairs, however, is up to you. We recommend purchasing additional seating that will also be useful outside of the party season. After all, there's no point having extra chairs lying around that don't really work with your living environment. If you're lucky enough to have a breakfast bar, a couple of extra bar stools can make all the difference. But if you're more of a low table household, some extra dining chairs can also slot into the different rooms around your house. For example, the bedroom and the hallway can always benefit from additional seating.

Make lists in advance

Anyone who has done any hosting before will tell you this: lists are their best friend. Planning in advance will certainly take out a lot of stress when the big day comes around! Sticking up lists on your fridge, on your cupboard doors and in your car will help you to remember to pick up all the bits and bobs you'll need. Start by making a list of the food and drink you currently have - then make a separate list of the extra things you need to pick up. Here are some starting points for your average autumn/winter party:

  • Alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, one or two spirits)
  • Mixers and soft drinks for those who don't drink (three or four types, at least one fizzy and one still)
  • Nibbles like crisps, olives, nuts, popcorn
  • Family-sharing finger food (large pizzas, chicken wings, chips, sandwiches)
  • Salad or roasted veg, depending on the main food and guests
  • Veggie option
  • Sauces and condiments
  • Glassware, plates, cutlery, napkins

And here is some inspiration for your holiday-specific celebration!

  • Halloween - apples for apple bobbing, pumpkins, spooky games and decorations, green icing to decorate cakes
  • Bonfire night - sparklers, fireworks, parkin cake or similar, toffee apples
  • Christmas - champagne or prosecco, table presents, candy canes, pigs in blankets, Christmas pudding, party games, paper hats and tinsel decorations

Utilise the space in your kitchen

Now that you've got all the food, drink and decorations ready, it's time to think about how you'll use the kitchen itself. Investing in a temporary mini fridge for the holiday season will be useful to keep beverages chilled - but if you can't afford this don't worry. Use the space outside your back door or a garage if you've got one. This works just as well and the UK's cold weather is free, of course! Another great idea for keeping drinks cold is using your sink as a temporary ice bucket. Fill it to the top with crushed or cubed ice and stick some bottles and cans inside for easy-access all night long. Clear your breakfast bar or another surface like a counter and dedicate this as your 'food zone'. If you've not got the room, use the dining room table as a buffet area.  One more thing: don't sporadically place spare chairs around the room, cluster a few together in groups. That way, people can socialise whilst seated or standing and no-one is left awkwardly alone.
