How to Make Your Home Office Instagram-Worthy on a Budget

4th July 2018

Working from home

If you're self-employed or work from home, you'll know the struggle of the home office all too well. Sometimes, that office is your bed. And there's nothing wrong with that. But a dedicated space or room with a proper desk can often give us that much-needed boost of productivity! In the age of bloggers and Instagram, we're constantly met by the pressure of '#goals' to get our interiors looking up to scratch. And that can be expensive. However, if you really want to make your office a gorgeous place to work (and take snaps of), you'll want to read the rest of this blog post.

Creating an Instagram-worthy office on a budget

Let's save you some pennies and achieve that sought-after Pinterest look and feel. It's easy once you know some of the industry's little tips and tricks! Here's how to achieve a home office you can be proud to call yours.

Start with the basics

First things first, you need to think about basics. Most of the offices you'll see on Pinterest and Instagram have one thing in common: they're clean and tidy! Start by decluttering your office (it's free, after all) and making a fresh start. Then, consider what you've already got. Do you need new furniture? Is your current layout working? Switch up the layout to give a fresh feel and see how much of a difference that makes. If you're still not happy, it might be time to get some new furniture. The white Bergen chair is absolutely everywhere at the moment and it can be yours for just £39.99! This will make a huge difference to your office as its such a focal piece. Now, desks can be expensive. Why not paint your existing one in a clean, white shade to match the chair? Just make sure you lay down a protective sheet first!

Check Gumtree and Ebay for local people selling office furniture that you can make use of. Remember - you can always update with a little DIY!

Use clever storage

One thing you'll never see on Instagram is a cluttered desk or papers lying about everywhere. Utilise your drawers (if you've got any) as much as possible to keep your visible surface areas clean and organised. Invest in a cheap filing cabinet like this one from Ikea to keep all your files and folders tucked away. Alternatively, use an old box or crate and get creative by painting it to match your furniture. Then, neatly tuck it under your desk as a hidden storage unit. Or how about stacking matching boxes on an open shelf above your desk? Sometimes it pays to think vertically...

Add small, interesting features as you go

There's always loads of cute and quirky features in those home office snaps on Instagram. However, we recommend building up your collection as a work in progress. Check out charity shops and budget stores for kitsch mugs and photo frames to add to your desk. If you're after one of those wire notice boards to stick notes and photos, there's one on Amazon here for a small price of £13.89. And whilst you're at it, stringing up some cheap fairy lights around your notice board can instantly turn your home office from drab to fab. You'll be Instagram-worthy in no time!

Try to match your accessories in one or two of your favourite colours. For example, adding pastel accents to a white office can really make it feel like an office straight out of Pinterest.
