Making Your Bedroom Extra Cosy This Winter

31st October 2017

Winter is creeping up on us...

Can you believe it's Halloween already? It only seems two minutes since we were lighting the barbecue and chilling out on the garden furniture. But it's time to accept that the weather is getting chillier now. How can you prepare yourself for the colder, darker days? There's no better way than to boost the decor and furniture in your home. Nothing speaks cosy like being within your own four walls!

Start with the bedroom

Of course, if you're going to make your home fit for winter, the best place to start is the bedroom. It's definitely the cosiest room of the house and where we spend a whopping 1/3 of our lives - in bed! So, how can you make your bedroom inviting and warm ready for winter? Keep reading to find out.

Add in more texture

This one's probably a no-brainer. Adding more texture to your bedroom will not only make it look cosier but will also create more warmth. We all know how expensive bills can get at this time of year so consider layering up, not only yourself but your furniture too! Throw a thicker, fluffier blanket onto the end of your bed or build up with several thinner blankets. If you match the material to your wallpaper or decor, you can really pull the room's interior design together. If your blankets don't really match or you don't like the look of them draped over your bed, you could fold a few up and store them away in a cute wicker basket or vintage-style trunk.

Consider adding in a rug - especially if you have wooden or laminate floors. The material of the rug will stop heat escaping through the floor and it's a cheaper, quicker fix to getting a carpet installed. Plus, rugs looks really great!

Layers of light

It's the darkest time of year, so we need to do everything to brighten it up! Of course, candles are the easiest option. You can make use of all those Christmas and birthday presents you'd stored away, or the tealights you've hoarded under the kitchen sink. Fairy lights are also a great addition to your bedroom. Try entwining them around your curtain pole, over your headboard or even around your mirror! The possibilities are endless. If you want to go all out, you could try using dimmers to create a more ambient light from your main ceiling lamps.

Change your furniture around

This is not only a great way to feel cosier in winter but adds a new level of appreciation for your home at any time of the year. You could start by moving your bed away from windows and doors to avoid feeling the draught. Move it closer to the radiator - but don't cover it - to feel more of the benefit of the heating. Alternatively, you could also stock up on draught excluders to be even more protected. If you've got a bit of extra cash to splash, you might consider adding some heavier drapes in over the windows which can be drawn back in the summer.

Maybe you're looking for a new bed as a new year treat? We recommend opting for an upholstered bed as the solid headboard and soft fabric create much more warmth in the bedroom. You might also think about adding a chair into your bedroom, so you've got somewhere to curl up with a book in the evenings. Occasional chairs can make an otherwise ordinary bedroom look like a beautiful boutique-style room. If you really want to change-up your decor more permanently, paint a darker colour on the walls (or a feature wall) as this will make the space more inviting and give it the appearance of warmth.

give the illusion of warmth

Speaking of tricking yourself into feeling warmer, we have the ultimate solution for those without a fireplace. There's a really realistic Netflix programme that mimics a crackling fire. Yep, we're serious! Just stick it on your TV or laptop whilst you're reading or chatting to friends. You'll feel super cosy in no time.

If you really don't want to get out of bed to face the cold, maybe you should try breakfast in bed more often. Invest in a breakfast tray so you can eat your croissants without feeling too frosty!
