Mid-Century Design and How to Introduce It into Your Home

17th October 2017

Whilst browsing our site, you may have come across our Mid Century Design dining chairs range. Or perhaps you stumbled across our blog elsewhere, but you’re curious to know what mid-century design is. Well, it’s your lucky day. Today we’re going to explore exactly what mid-century refers to and how can you can encapsulate it in your own home.

What is mid-century design?

According to The Spruce, it’s an interior design style with roots dating back to a time period from the 1930s to the 1970s (there or thereabouts). However, it really hit its peak during the 50s and 60s. It has certain characteristics that summarise its unique charm. Mid-century design tends to shy away from ornate features and extravagant details. Rather, it sticks to clean lines and minimal ornamentation.

The real purpose of mid-century design came about with the Modernist movement. This was inspired by both the Industrial Revolution and the ending of the world wars. Designers and architects were overloaded with a need for new homes. There were also many changes happening in the way families used technology, and a home’s interiors needed to reflect that. The mid-century style was first seen in America, but with some of the inspiration coming from earlier German design. It was all about functionality and no fuss.

Is it still relevant today?

It may have evolved from post-war times, but it’s still considered extremely trendy. The mid-century design appeals to so many people as it represents normal, working families. There's nothing frivolous about it. Plus, the western world is obsessed with all things retro and vintage. Everywhere we look, we're greeted with recycled fashion and statement pieces from decades gone by. So, it’s easy to see why mid-century interiors are so popular! Here at Lakeland Furniture, we love it too. In fact, we love it so much, that we’ve got a whole section dedicated to mid-century design chairs.

The Bergen dining chair

Bergen Mid-Century dining chair

This type of chair is the ultimate mid-century staple. To some, it’s known as the Eiffel chair due to its significant structure. To us, it’s the beloved Bergen. Our Bergen dining chair comes in a huge array of colours to suit any interior. White is a hugely popular choice - probably because it goes with everything and looks super sleek!

This chair is also a great piece to inject some mid-century goodness into your home. The Bronby dining chair is perfect for those who want less detail in their chair, and prefer simplicity over a huge statement. However, it still retains that mid-century charm and comes in a variety of colours.

the nova dining chair

For those who want to lean towards the more modern side of design, the Nova chair could be perfect. The sleek chrome structure offers a gorgeous finish like no other and really makes any dining room pop! If you're feeling especially brave, you could opt for primary colours such as blue, red and yellow. If you'd rather keep it subtle, you'll love our neutral shades of biscuit, light grey and vanilla.

How else can you add mid-century design to your home?

You may not be ready to make the commitment to dining chairs just yet, or perhaps you've already stocked up! Either way, there's plenty of other things you can do to add that mid-century feel to your home. Try a classic credenza as a statement piece in your dining or living room. Darker shades of wood are more suitable for this particular age of design. A cocktail table is a classy way to add the mid-century touch, especially if you're a fan of the odd tipple or two. For further inspiration, you could check out the American TV show 'Mad Men', if you've not already seen it. Interior design AND a Netflix marathon - what more could you want?
