New Home: Furniture Buying Checklist

3rd March 2020

Moving into a new home or apartment is a big change, and it can be rather daunting when you’ve got a million things to get sorted. No house is your home until you make it your own, which means decorating it the way you’ve envisioned, purchasing the cotton candy armchair you know will look great in your living room or lounge area, painting the walls your favourite colour because you can, and many more things that add personality and character to the rooms in your house.

Our new home checklist is for new homes, but especially for first time buyers. Preparing for the move, and moving in day can be stressful and we’re here to make it that little bit easier, with an ultimate checklist so you don’t forget essentials and things you actually need. Rather than give you a never ending list of items and products, we’ve separated this checklist by room, and added additional extras to give you some inspiration if you’re a little stuck.

Living Room Furniture Checklist

Sofa

The sofa is without a doubt, the most important furniture piece in your living room and lounge space. It’s essentially a centre piece, which then allows for you to think about other furniture pieces and accessories to mix and match. There are various types of sofas including leather, fabric and velvet. Depending on your preference and comfort levels, the choice is all yours.

Coffee Table

Coffee tables are popular because of their functionality and practicality. They provide a central service space for you to rest your cups and glasses on, as well as many other items that can easily be retrieved. However, if you’re aiming for a more open plan look and feel, side tables are a better alternative.

Side Table

Side tables are more convenient if you’re looking to maximise space in the living room. They’re great additions to add accessories such as artwork or lamps, or you could simply use it as a surface for placing drinks on.

Chairs & Stools

Chairs and bar stools are fantastic additions when you need to provide more seating space. Accent chairs should match with the interior scheme and style, so each piece of furniture compliments themselves. With some sofa types, there will be the choice of an armchair of sofa chair that comes as part of the set, but alternatively chairs and stools can add more character and individuality.

Entertainment Unit

For many homes across the globe, the entertainment unit is an important feature as it’s a focal point in the living room. There is a vast range of entertainment units depending on your requirements, you can go simple with a TV stand, to entertainment centres that provide you with a stand for the TV, storage space, units and plenty more. Alternatively, placing your TV on the wall is an easier solution.

Accessories

While there are some big investments and purchases that come with renovating your new living room, it’s important to not forget the small things that can make the biggest difference. We’ve compiled a short list of accessories below, so be sure to put these on your ‘to buy’ list.

  • Plants (new and artificial)
  • Throws and rugs
  • Accent pillows
  • Artwork
  • Small ornaments

Kitchen & Dining Furniture Checklist

Dining Table & Chairs

Depending on the size of your new home’s kitchen and dining area, dining chairs are a must. They’re essentially the statement centre piece, just like how the sofa is the centre piece for a living room. Creating a good atmosphere in the kitchen and dining area is great if you’re someone who loves to spend time wining and dining. DSR chairs have become quite the popularity trend, gaining a lot of attention in 2019, and 2020 is behind the trend too.

Units

Kitchen units make a huge part of any kitchen, and for many of us the most important room in the home, is the kitchen or the bathroom. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen and in dining rooms, so it needs to be a room that reflects who we are and the style we like. For many modern and contemporary interiors, open plan spaces are the trend which means units are becoming less of a necessity.

Accessories

  • Cookware

Bedroom Furniture Checklist

Bed

Of course, you’re going to need a bed, unless you like sleeping on the floor. Go for a double or a king size to truly feel freedom and space when you sleep! Don’t forget the mattress, and potentially a headboard if that’s your style.

Bedside Cabinet

These are essentially side tables, but for the bedroom. They’re ideal for letting lamps sit on them, as well as other accessories and items that you need close by when you’re in bed.

Accent Chair

Just like a living room accent chair, an accent chair in the bedroom is a great place for seating when you want to read a book or do some work. We often forget accent pieces all throughout the home, and although our beds are as comfy as they get, new additions to the bedroom can give it a new sense of life and style.

Chest of Drawers

The chest that usually holds most of our clothing’s and belongings, away from anyone’s sight. Every room needs storage, and chest of drawers are able to add height to your bedroom.

Bathroom Furniture Checklist

Storage

Bathrooms are a place of soothing relaxation and unwind time, so it’s no surprise that many of us take great pride in making it one of the best rooms in the house, after (or before) the kitchen. For small bathrooms, it can be hard to decide where to put certain objects and items, such as toiletries. There are various ways to implement simple storage solutions such as shelves and hanging baskets.

Accessories

  • Bathroom bin
  • Shower stools
  • Cleaning supplies
