How to Prepare Your Rattan Garden Furniture for Summer

20th June 2018

Preparing your rattan garden furniture for summer

If you're anything like us, you'll have already been enjoying this lovely (touch wood) summer so far in the UK. We've got the outdoor furniture set up and ready to enjoy those BBQs and wine-filled afternoons. Now, although we're well into June, we've still got plenty of sunshine to enjoy yet. So don't be in a hurry to start thinking about packing it away! If you want your garden furniture to stay in good condition all summer long, you need to follow these new few tips and tricks.

1. Make sure your set is placed in an appropriate location

First things first, you should ensure you've planned out your furniture set to sit in an appropriate place. For example, rattan garden furniture should not sit on the grass - the moisture can ruin the material! If you don't have a patio or decking on which to place your furniture, consider laying down a temporary decking made from pallets or use protectors. However, where possible, place your furniture on decking, patio or artificial grass.

2. Protect your garden furniture with a parasol or umbrella

The moisture from the grass is not the only potential danger to your garden furniture. Sunlight can bleach your cushions or rattan material so it's always wise to have an umbrella or parasol providing some shade. Not only that but you and your family will really benefit from the shade. Sitting out in the sun for too long can be detrimental to your skin and health. But you don't need us to tell you that, we're sure...

3. Use stoppers under the legs of your rattan garden furniture

As we mentioned earlier, it is important to ensure your rattan furniture is placed over a suitable flooring or material. If you really care about the condition of your set, you should consider using stoppers on the legs of your chairs, table and sofa sets. Furniture stoppers are cheap and readily available from many home & DIY stores. These cushioned add-ons will prevent too much pressure on the legs of your rattan - this can inevitably cause splintering, cracking and damage to the furniture. When it comes to an expensive set of garden furniture, it's definitely better to be safe than sorry!

4. Give your garden furniture a thorough clean

At the start of the summer season, it's likely that your rattan furniture has been in storage for quite some time. This means it's important to give it a good clean before you take it out and use it! Of course, you'll want your furniture to be nice and usable for guests but a clean will also prevent it from being ruined.
