How to Guide: Storing Outdoor Furniture in the Winter

The importance of storing garden furniture

This time of year is so exciting - Bonfire night is a recent memory and Christmas will sneak up on us before we know it! However, don't forget to neatly tuck away the remnants of Summer. Although you won't be needing your garden furniture throughout these colder months, you shouldn't just neglect it. Follow our simple guide to correctly store away your outdoor furniture sets!

First things first - cleaning

When the time comes to stow away your furniture, it's likely that it'll have been outside for quite some time. You wouldn't just put your clothes back in your wardrobe without washing them, would you? Well, it's the same for outdoor furniture! Although we are experts with rattan furniture here at Lakeland, we recognise there are plenty of different types and materials. No matter what material your furniture is - you need to give it a clean before even considering storing it away. Use a dry cloth to get rid of any surface dirt, dust and spider webs. You'll probably be surprised at how much of a difference this makes! Then, you can continue to get to the cleaning stage.

Cleaning doesn't have to be complicated. Simply take a bucket and fill it with warm water. Add in mild dishwashing soap to create a lather. Use a new cloth to clean the furniture down with the soapy water. Again, you will see how much of a difference this makes straight away. Now, you can wait whilst your furniture dries off. It's probably recommended to do this whole process on a dry day so that the rain doesn't hinder you!

now it's dry...

When your outdoor furniture is dry, you can start the storing process. There are many things to consider here. First, have you decided where you will store your furniture? If you're choosing a shed, is it big enough to fit everything in? Remember that keeping items in your shed over the winter may lead to a musty smell. Ensure that you let some air in every now and then to prevent that unpleasant scent! You could consider moving the furniture to a covered location outdoors, such as under a veranda or a large porch area.

preparing to store

When preparing to store your furniture, you should protect it with a suitable cover. If you don't have a designated furniture cover, try using a large enough sheet of tarpaulin to keep it sheltered from rain and snow. You could lay a plank of wood on the ground and place the furniture legs on top of it - this method will really help your furniture last.

Now your furniture is ready to store!
