Buying Guide: Things to Consider When Buying Bar Stools

23rd October 2017

Our range of bar stools is something of a legend. We are immensely proud of the variety we stock, but before you get too carried away - consider the following points to ensure you are happy with your purchase.

What is the difference between counter stools and bar stools?

Here at Lakeland Furniture, we sell both counter stools and bar stools. What is the difference between the two? Generally, counter stools measure around 24 inches and bar stools measure around 30 inches. Counter stools usually for sitting at kitchen counters, whilst bar stools are best for sitting at bars.

Getting the correct height and size

Measuring from floor to highest point of the bar is a good way to get the correct height on your stools. Take the height that you have measured and subtract 10 inches. This is the height that will be appropriate for whatever stool you pick, giving you enough room to sit comfortably and tuck the stool under when not in use. Our previous blog post outlines this in more detail.

Counter stools tend to range between 24 and 29 inches from the floor. This is appropriate for counters that measure between 34 and 39 inches tall. For taller surfaces measuring between 40 and 46 inches, try and go for a stool that is around 30 to 36 inches high.

Bar stools in a modern kitchen

The size and style of your kitchen or bar area

Smaller kitchens may benefit from backless bar stools as they create the illusion of more space. These backless bar stools will also comfortably tuck under the bar or counter, meaning that floor space will become free when seating is not in use.

However, if your room’s size will allow it, you could opt for stools with a backrest and armrest for that extra added comfort and support.

The size of your counter or bar will also depend on how many bar stools you can fit behind it. Remember that there are certain guidelines to follow when spacing your stools.

How will you be using your bar stools?

Even if you don’t have a large enough kitchen, you may benefit from back and armrests if the bar stools will be your main seating. Spending long periods of time in a backless bar stool may cause aches and pains. We offer bar stools with padded seats for that much-needed luxury.

Who will be using the bar stools?

If you’ve got little ones running around your home, it may be worthwhile selecting stools with adjustable heights. Children of all ages and heights will then be able to comfortably sit, without feeling left out. This said, consider the height of the surface. If your barstool is lowered considerably, will this leave comfortable enough room for the child to still sit and eat?

Any spillages caused by kids - or otherwise!- can be easily cleaned if you select the right material of barstool.

Flexibility is a bonus

Adjustable stool height is not just something that will affect different heights of people. If you’re considering moving house in the future, you never know what the surfaces will be like. However, with adjustable stools, you’ll never need to worry. Simply increase or decrease the height of your beloved stools to fit under any bar or counter.
