Working From Your Home Office: Productivity Tips

Boost productivity in the home office

Working from home can be a really rewarding prospect. You can design your office to your exact taste. Distractions from other people can be kept to a minimum. Commuting is a thing of the past. You can have as many tea breaks as you like without coworker judgement. And of course, you don't have to share a smelly staff kitchen! However, it can be hard to stay productive with the endless temptations of the TV and your big, cosy bed... hands up anyone who's taken their laptop to bed before! In today's blog post, we're going to explore some of our favourite tips to remaining productive when working in a home office.

Our top tips

1. stick to a timed routine

Set a timer. This may sound simple, but we've heard it from some of the best writers in the world. And these people know how to be productive, churning out thousands of words a day. Set a timer for at least 30 minutes (or figure out a time that best suits you) and commit to working solidly for that time. Once your timer has gone off, spend 5-10 minutes doing another task or go and make yourself a cup of tea. Trust us, you'll end up getting a lot more done than if you were to sit and stare at your screen for 3 hours. A set time period will force your brain into work mode and prevent procrastination. After all, you know that once that time is up, you can do something else!

2. have distraction-free periods

Okay, we're not stupid. We're not telling you to completely leave your phone locked away in the outdoor shed for the entire day. However, you should commit to periods of time where you don't check your phone - or sneakily open up tabs on your computer. Although it's nice to catch up with friends throughout the day and get our daily dose of social media, it won't make you any more productive. This ties in nicely to our first point; those timed periods of solid work should be without any Facebook-related distractions.

3. Don't be tempted to stay in bed

Working in bed may seem like a dream but it's actually really bad for your productivity levels. Being in such a comfortable space will trick your brain into being less alert.  Whilst it can be hard to drag yourself out of bed when you haven't got to 'clock in', you'll see a massive spike in productivity when you're actually sat at a proper desk. Make your home office a place that you're proud of and you'll look forward to spending time in there! A good office chair can be just as comfortable as being in bed but is a lot better for your mental state. And remember... as soon as you've completed your daily work, you're free to jump back into bed and binge watch Netflix.

4. Dress for the office

You may not be in the workplace but you should at least get out of your pyjamas! Staying in your comfies all day might tempt you to be a little bit more chilled about your work than usual. We're not talking full-on business attire. However, getting dressed for the day and doing your hair will definitely help you to feel more productive. The thinking behind this is: if you've made the effort to get ready, you might as well make the effort in everything else you do. It's similar to the mantra that if you make your bed in the morning, the rest of the day will fall into place. And if you make your bed, you won't be tempted to get back into it!

5. Take a break

Working at home can sometimes mean you'll fall into bad habits. In the office, you stick to a routine because everyone else does. But when you're working at home alone, you may start to work through lunch or forget to have a breather in the afternoon. Take time to leave your home office for a change of scenery. And please, make sure you still have your lunch break! After all, you're still entitled.
