How do I clean rust off my metal bar stool base?

A bar stool can really add a beautiful touch to any home. There are many uses for bar stools so you can really get creative. However, nothing looks better than when they are well-maintained and beautifully cleaned.

Whether you've got a home bar or a dressing table, you'll want to know how to clean your bar stools properly. And unfortunately, metal bases can sometimes become rusty. This is just in the nature of metal-based furniture. However, it's easy to sort it out with the right tools and the right instructions. Here's how to clean rust from your bar stool's metal base. Bear in mind there are a few different methods so it's up to you to choose your favourite one!

Method 1 - What you'll need:

  • White vinegar
  • Aluminium foil
  • Rag

Method 1 - What to do:

Start by soaking the metal base in white vinegar. If you can submerge the base into a bucket or wash basin filled with white vinegar then great. If not, use a rag dipped in white vinegar to soak a layer over the metal base. Allow it to sit for a few hours then scrub off with a rag. Try aluminium foil dipped in white vinegar to scrub at the metal base if the rust is tough.

Method 2 - What you'll need:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Old toothbrush

Method 2 - What to do:

Create a paste with some baking soda and water. There are no exact measurements here, simply mix a thick paste that won't run. Cover the metal base with the baking soda paste and let it set. After it's set, use an old toothbrush to scrub off the mixture!

Method 3 - What you'll need:

  • A lime or lemon
  • Salt
  • Old rag or toothbrush

Method 3 - What to do:

Take a lime or lemon, cut it in half then squeeze out a good portion of juice. Set that aside and sprinkle a large amount of salt over the metal base. Then, pour the juice over the top to create a gritty mixture. Allow this to set for a few hours. Use an old toothbrush or rough rag to scrub the mixture away. It's also a good idea to use the rind of the fruit to scrub if needed!

If all else fails...

If you still can't clean rust off your metal base with the above household methods, try purchasing a rust cleaner from your local hardware store. There are many products out there which will do the job. However, it's always worth trying methods with staples that you might find in your kitchen pantry! Let us know in the comments which your favourite method is.
