How wide is the average bar stool? On average a barstool has an approx. seat width of 40cm. If you choose a stool with arms this will take it to around 50cm seat width.
How far apart should I space my bar stools?
You should space your stools roughly 15cm apart from each other at the breakfast bar or counter. This allows you free movement and easy access in and out. However, if you think you might need more room than the average person or you have a small household, you might want to increase this distance! Ultimately, it's up to you but we recommend a minimum of 15cm.

How many bar stools for a 6ft island?
6ft is approx. 180cm. Three stools would comfortably fit 1 side of the island. At a push and squeezing the space between stools, you could get 4 stools in this space. If you were to do this make sure you purchase narrow armless stools. However, for a more comfortable space and larger stools, we'd recommend two or three.
How far should a bar stool be from the counter?
The depth of a stool seat will vary between 43-55cm. If space is tight, consider adjustable stools with small backrests. They can be stored under the countertop when not in use. As most bar stools are not fixed to the floor, the actual distance from the countertop doesn't matter. Each person can adjust to their own preference!
How tall should my bar stools be?As a rule of thumb, we say that there are four main stool heights: counter height, breakfast bar height, bar height and adjustable height stools. To learn more about different heights read our article on the right stool height.
We hope this has helped
Hopefully, these answers will help you answer that burning question: "How many bar stools do I need?" Remember to take careful note of the seat width. Stools with arms will extend the width and reduce the number you can have. There's always points to consider so it's about being sensible and customising your kitchen to your needs.
