Do I need to protect the feet of my synthetic rattan furniture?

In a short answer: it depends. We understand that this might be a bit of a frustrating answer but it's very important. Everyone's synthetic rattan furniture set-up might be different, as well as the layout of their garden. Here are the factors which you should consider before we answer the question properly:

  • What type of ground is in your garden? (e.g. grass, decking, patio)
  • Which ground is your furniture placed on?
  • Does your furniture come with some form of protection already?

What this means for your furniture

Now you've considered these questions, we can get down to business! First things first, if your garden furniture is placed on the grass, you will definitely need to protect its feet. This is especially important if you have real rattan furniture (although we'd suggest not placing this on the grass in the first place). For synthetic rattan furniture, you need to buy some rubber stops for the feet of your set. This will protect it from the damp of the grass and prevent any splitting or damage of the furniture in future. Secondly, if your furniture set is placed on a patio or similar hard-stone surface, it could be prone to scratching. Again, this can be solved with rubber stops on the feet of your furniture. Bear in mind, if you do have this type of ground in your garden, it's always preferable to place your furniture here rather than grass. A dry surface is best for rattan, always. Thirdly, if your rattan furniture is on a decking, you might be able to get away with not protecting the feet. As long as the furniture isn't exposed to damp conditions or a scratchy surface, it should be fine. Of course, if you have synthetic rattan furniture this is a given. But if you've got real rattan, you might want to consider protecting the feet just in case. After all, it's much more prone to being damaged. Lastly, if your furniture comes with some sort of protection already, it's up to you what to do. Most good quality rattan furniture (whether synthetic or natural) should have protection already. But if you have any doubts about your garden surface or the quality of your rattan, please buy rubber stops to protect the feet. After all, it's always better to be safe than sorry.
