Rattan garden furniture: how long does it last?

It may feel like the coldest it's ever been and the storms certainly aren't letting up but winter will soon be on its way out. Once the sun pokes its yellow head through the clouds, you'll want to be ready! Ready to get the barbecue on and entertain friends, that is. So, if you're considering buying some rattan garden furniture this spring, there are a few things to think about. Of course, it's a reasonable investment to buy a set of outdoor furniture so you'll want to know how long it is going to last.

You are probably aware that there are two types of rattan garden furniture out there: natural and synthetic. Like most materials, you can buy the artificial version as a cheaper alternative to the real thing. There are also more benefits to synthetic rattan! As we're speaking about longevity, it's worth bearing in mind that synthetic rattan garden furniture lasts much longer than natural. Natural rattan is beautiful and very traditional for garden furniture. However, as we said it is more expensive and doesn't last as long as synthetic due to its natural fibres. If you're looking for conservatory furniture then natural might be a good option. Although, if you want furniture for the garden then we strongly recommend synthetic rattan.

Why does synthetic rattan last longer?

As long as you ensure the rattan you purchase is of high quality, you will be amazed at the results you can achieve. Whilst natural rattan can be damaged by sun, frost and rain, good synthetic rattan tends to be weather-proof. Your artificial rattan garden furniture is UV resistant and won't be ruined by the elements. Bear in mind, it is much more lightweight than natural rattan but it is also stronger! In terms of how long it will last, it mostly depends on how well you look after it. It is important to keep it covered or stored away when not in use to make sure it is protected. This is usually to stop dust or mould and mildew gathering.

Cleaning your synthetic rattan is easy and we will soon be posting a blog post about this but for the meantime, check out this blog post for tips. All in all, you could be looking at a good 10 - 20 year run with your synthetic rattan furniture. This is not an achievable figure with natural rattan so it is definitely worth bearing this alternative material in mind.
