Removing Mould and Mildew from Your Garden Umbrella

How to remove mould and mildew from your garden umbrella

Unfortunately, we've all experienced the nasty smell and look of mould and mildew. It creeps up on us when we least expect it - or usually when we've not been 100% careful with our garden furniture. Mould and mildew can also grow on your garden umbrella. This isn't surprising considering this accessory is often left out in all weather conditions, including rain and humidity. When your umbrella gets too damp and doesn't get a chance to dry out properly, that dread mildew is likely to form. But don't worry! It's actually quite easy to get rid of this stuff if you know how. Keep reading to find out how you can tackle this problem yourself.

What you'll need

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Toothbrush
  • Bucket of hot water

The Method

  1. Ideally, you should complete this method in the morning so that the umbrella has the whole day to dry. And of course, pick a warm, sunny day when it is highly unlikely to rain.
  2. Begin by mixing a tablespoon of baking soda to the empty spray bottle, along with equal parts lemon juice and salt. Then, fill the rest of the bottle up with white vinegar.
  3. Spray your mixture liberally all over the fabric of the garden umbrella, focusing particularly on areas that have been affected badly by mould.
  4. Next, use a toothbrush to massage the solution into the fabric for extra impact.
  5. Leave to soak for ten minutes.
  6. Now, you can use the bucket of hot water to rinse off the solution! It may take several runs to get the garden umbrella completely clean.
  7. Open up the umbrella as wide as it will go and leave to dry in the sunniest spot in your garden.
  8. Do not close the umbrella or store it away until is it COMPLETELY dry. This is the most important point to remember as this is the reason it got covered in mould and mildew in the first place! When it comes to winter or a rainy day, make sure you store it away in a dry, well-circulated place.
If you own a steam cleaner, try using this to clean your garden parasol and getting rid of mould and mildew.
