A guide to the available sizes of garden parasols

Everyone knows that the British summertime isn't the most reliable. However, on those surprisingly scorching days, there's nothing worse than being unprepared! To make sure you'll always be sheltered from the sun's rays, it's worth investing in a garden umbrella. If you don't have one already, take a look at our collection here. We have a broad range of garden umbrellas and parasols to suit any outdoor space. And today, we're going to discuss the different sizes available to you. You might find it tricky to get your head around the various measurements but we'll explain it in simple terms. First things first, you should understand that we have three main types of parasol here at Lakeland Furniture. We sell the following garden umbrellas, differentiated firstly by name: Oxford, Henley and Cambridge. Now, we'll discuss each individual umbrella so you can understand the difference in size.

The Cambridge: Smaller coverage, average height, adjustable

The Cambridge is a perfect solution for anyone with a smaller outdoor space. Here are the specific measurements of this umbrella: Width 200cm, Height 210cm, Depth 200cm. This is the smallest measurement of parasol that we offer. Therefore, it would really suit a small patio area that could benefit from some shade. However, the height is an average 2.1m so make sure you take this into consideration when measuring upwards! The steel pole diameter is 38mm. Even if you've got a larger garden space, this umbrella could create a cosy corner and would be the perfect addition to an outdoor dining set. Bear in mind, the Cambridge uses a crank and tilt mechanism so you can adjust the angle as the sun moves across the sky.

The Henley: Larger coverage, taller height, adjustable

The Henley umbrella is great for larger gardens and more spread out garden furniture sets. Here are the exact measurements of this umbrella: Width 300cm, Height 240cm, Depth 300cm. However, the steel pole has the same diameter as the Cambridge at 38mm. With a larger width and depth, you can expect more shade and coverage from this umbrella! So, it's perfect for sprawled out decking areas or sheltering over a hot tub for example. There is also a lot more height with the Henley which of course contributes a larger area of shade. Although this umbrella is larger in measurement than the Cambridge, it uses the same mechanism. You can also use the crank and tilt feature to adjust your garden umbrella's position and coverage throughout the day.

The Oxford: Average coverage, average height, non-adjustable

The Oxford is a good solution for your outdoor dining table for those al fresco moments. Its exact measurements are as follows: Width 300cm, Depth 200cm, Height 200cm. Although it has less depth than the Henley, the width is the same. This umbrella takes on a rectangle umbrella so it has a lower coverage area but might be more suitable for those wanting a static shape. As we mentioned earlier, this could be perfect for your outdoor dining set as it is not adjustable (aside from winding it up and down to close or open). The height is a respectable 2m which makes it the shortest of our garden umbrellas, but also the most suitable for eating and drinking under due to the concentrated shade it will produce.

38-48 Inches 9-11 feet
54-60 Inches 11 feet or larger

Overall...

We recommend that you measure up the amount of shade you'll require before purchasing any of our garden umbrellas. For example, if you need a parasol to cover your outdoor dining set then make sure you've measured out the width and depth of the table and chairs together - or at least, the table on its own. After all, it depends on how much you want to be covered on those sunny days and what you'd like your outdoor space to look like. If you'd prefer a smaller umbrella as a quick fix that can be easily stored away, the Cambridge is perfect. However, the Oxford is obviously more appropriate for larger dining sets that stay out all year round.
