The seat height of an office chair when at a standard height desk should be approximately 15 to 21 inches (38 to 53 cm) from the floor. This range allows for a comfortable seating position with the feet flat on the floor or on a footrest, and the thighs parallel to the ground. It is important to choose a chair with adjustable seat height to ensure that it can be properly positioned for your body and desk height.
Many no-wheel desk chairs prioritize comfort with padded seats, armrests, and ergonomic support. They’re perfect for home setups or compact offices.
Absolutely. These chairs are built for function and space efficiency—perfect for working from a desk in a bedroom, living room, or dedicated home office.
Yes! From bold colours like gold and orange to retro and modern styles, you’ll find fashionable desk chairs that enhance your room’s look while keeping things practical.
Disassembling a desk chair is usually straightforward and only takes a few basic tools. Whether you’re moving house, replacing parts, or recycling the chair, here’s a step-by-step guide:
-
Remove the wheels (casters):
Turn the chair upside down and pull the wheels out of the base. They usually pop out with a firm tug, but a flathead screwdriver can help if they’re stuck. -
Detach the seat from the base:
Use a spanner or Allen key (often provided with the chair) to unscrew the bolts under the seat. This separates the seat and backrest from the gas lift and base. -
Remove the gas lift (piston):
This part can be tricky. Tap around the base of the gas lift with a rubber mallet while pulling gently. If it won’t budge, you might need a wrench or a special gas lift removal tool. -
Take apart the base:
The star-shaped base can usually be lifted straight off once the gas lift is out.
Tip: Keep all screws and parts in a small container so you don’t lose anything. If you're planning to reuse or sell the chair, disassemble gently to avoid damage.
The ideal height for a desk chair depends on your height and the height of your desk, but a good rule of thumb is:
-
Your feet should rest flat on the floor
-
Your knees should be at a 90-degree angle
-
Your thighs should be parallel to the floor
For most adults, this means the seat height should be somewhere between 40cm and 53cm (16 to 21 inches) from the floor.
If you're using a standard desk that’s around 73–76cm high, an adjustable chair will help you find the right position. Most modern desk chairs come with a gas lift so you can tweak the height easily.
For kids desk chairs, the same idea applies—just scaled down. The chair should allow children to sit comfortably with their feet flat and elbows level with the desk when typing or writing.
Tip: If the chair is too high and your feet don’t touch the floor, a footrest can help improve posture and comfort.
Your feet should rest flat on the floor, your knees should be at a 90-degree angle, and your thighs should be parallel to the floor. If not, adjust the seat height or use a footrest
Dining chairs may be suitable for short-term use, but they usually lack ergonomic features and adjustability, making them less comfortable and supportive for extended desk work
Look for adjustable seat height, lumbar support, comfortable padding, and a stable base. Features like adjustable heat, backrest tilt, and seat depth can greatly improve comfort and posture support
Cleaning a desk chair is simple once you know the type of material you’re working with. Here’s a quick guide:
-
Fabric Chairs: Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust and crumbs. For stains, mix a small amount of mild detergent with warm water and dab gently with a soft cloth. Avoid soaking the fabric.
-
Leather or PU Chairs: Wipe down with a damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid. Dry with a soft towel to avoid water spots. For a deeper clean, use a leather-safe cleaning spray.
-
Mesh Chairs: These can trap dust easily. Use a handheld vacuum or a lint roller for everyday cleaning. For spills, gently scrub with a soft brush and soapy water, then let it air dry.
-
Plastic or Metal Parts: Wipe down with a general household cleaner or anti-bac wipes.
The terms office chair and desk chair are often used interchangeably, but there can be some small differences depending on the design and how they’re used:
-
Desk Chair:
A desk chair is usually a simpler, more compact chair designed for shorter periods of sitting. It might not have as many adjustable features and is often used in home offices, bedrooms, or study areas. Many kids desk chairs fall into this category too. -
Office Chair:
An office chair tends to be built for longer sitting hours. These usually have more features like adjustable armrests, lumbar support, headrests, and higher backs. They’re commonly used in workplace settings or by people working full-time from home.
That said, the difference really comes down to the features and comfort level. At Lakeland Furniture, we offer both types—whether you need a simple chair for a small desk or a fully supportive option for all-day use.
